(1891-1937) Italian Marxist who attempted to unify social theory and political practice. He helped to found the Italian Communist Party 1921 and was elected to parliament 1924, but was imprisoned by the Fascist leader Mussolini from 1926; his Quaderni di carcere/Prison Notebooks were published posthumously 1947.
