An exclusive residential district.
(Australia) Resort region on the east coast of Australia, stretching 32 km/20 mi along the coast of Queensland and New South Wales S of Brisbane; Africa) Former name for Ghana, but historically the west coast of Africa from Cape Three Points to the Volta River, where alluvial gold is washed down. Portuguese and French navigators visited this coast in the 14th century, and a British trading settlement developed into the colony of the Gold Coast 1618. With its dependencies of Ashanti and Northern Territories plus the trusteeship territory of Togoland, it became Ghana 1957. The name is also used for many coastal resort areas—for example, in Florida, US.
