(1784-1843) Brazilian politician, regent of Brazil 1835–37. The illegitimate son of a priest, Feijó trained for the priesthood and was a teacher before his election to the Portuguese Cortes (parliament) 1821. A dedicated liberal and opponent of the slave trade, he was appointed minister of justice after the abdication of Pedro II 1831. A hostile parliament allowed him to accomplish little as regent.
