(Estrada) (1927-) US labor organizer who founded the National Farm Workers Association 1962 and, with the support of the AFL-CIO and other major unions, embarked on a successful campaign to unionize California grape workers. He led boycotts of citrus fruits, lettuce, and grapes in the early 1970s, but disagreement and exploitation of migrant farm laborers continued despite his successes.
Born near Yuma, Arizona, to a family of migrant farm workers, Chavez was deeply influenced by the organizing efforts of Saul Alinsky among agricultural workers in California in the early 1950s. Chavez devoted himself to the cause of unionization and became director of the Community Service Organization 1958.

(1899-1978) Mexican composer and pianist. His music incorporates national and pre-Columbian folk elements, for example Chapultepec: Republican Overture 1935. He composed a number of ballets, seven symphonies, and concertos for both violin and piano.
He was founder-director of the Mexico Symphony Orchestra 1928–48.
