Former crownland and duchy of Austria, most of which was included in Slovenia, part of the kingdom of the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia) 1919–91. The western districts of Idrija and Postojna, then allocated to Italy, were transferred to Yugoslavia 1947. Carniola is now part of independent Slovenia.
