(1870-1953) Russian writer. He was the author of The Village 1910, a novel which tells of the passing of peasant life; and the short story collection The Gentleman from San Francisco 1916 (about the death of a millionaire on Capri), for which he received a Nobel Prize 1933. He was also a poet and translated Byron into Russian.
