(1875-1940) Scottish politician and author. Called to the Bar 1901, he was Conservative Member of Parliament for the Scottish universities 1927–35, and governor-general of Canada 1934–40. His adventure stories, today criticized for their antisemitism, include The Thirty-Nine Steps 1915, Greenmantle 1916, and The Three Hostages 1924.
