(1782-1850) Scottish history painter. Born in Edinburgh, he spent several years in Russia and traveled widely in Europe and the Middle East, returning to Edinburgh 1814. He was elected president of the Royal Scottish Academy 1838. His paintings include scenes from Walter Scott's Waverley novels.
(1744-1796) Scottish history and genre painter. He studied in Glasgow and at Rome, where 1773 he won a gold medal for his Origin of Painting and became a member of the Academy of St Luke. He settled in Edinburgh and was known as the “Scottish Hogarth” for his watercolors and engravings of contemporary life, his subjects, for example The Penny Wedding (Edinburgh), anticipating those of Wilkie.
