(611-580 BC) Greek lyric poet of Lesbos; reputed inventor of Alcaic verse. Born at Mytilene in Lesvos, he was a member of a family opposed to the ruling tyrants, and spent time in exile.
The surviving fragments of his poems deal with politics, drinking, and love. The Alcaic stanza is named for him. He was a friend of Sappho.
