(1860-1938) US novelist. He created the Western genre. He was born in Philadelphia, a grandson of the English actress Fanny Kemble, and became known for stories of cowboys, including The Virginian 1902. He also wrote Roosevelt: The Story of a Friendship 1880–1919 1930, about his relationship with US president Theodore Roosevelt.
