(1889-1967) British-born US character actor. He achieved success with his first film role as the unseen hero of The Invisible Man 1933, followed by a string of roles opposite Bette Davis (Now, Voyager 1942, Mr Skeffington 1945, and Deception 1946). He became noted for playing suave and sardonic figures such as the police chief in Casablanca 1942, Prince John in Adventures of Robin Hood 1938, and the mother-dominated Nazi in Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious 1946.
On the London stage from the age of 11, he graduated to Broadway and then Hollywood.
