(1890-1957) German field marshal in World War II, responsible for much of the detailed planning of Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union 1941, and commander of the forces that besieged Stalingrad (now Volgograd) 1942–43. He was captured and gave evidence for the prosecution at the Nuremberg trials before settling in East Germany.
