Or pavan; A slow, stately court dance in double time, of Paduan origin, especially popular in Italy and France in the 16th and 17th centuries. Music composed for or derived from the pavane is often coupled with that composed for a galliard. Composers include Dowland and Byrd, more recently Ravel, whose Pavane pour une infante défunte/Pavane for a Dead Infanta for piano 1899 was orchestrated 1905.
