Cereal belonging to the grass family (Gramineae). It resembles wheat but is more tolerant of cold and drafts. Cultivated barley Hordeum vulgare comprises three main varieties—six-rowed, four-rowed, and two-rowed.
Barley was one of the earliest cereals to be cultivated, about 50BC in Egypt, and no other cereal can thrive in so wide a range of climatic conditions; polar barley is sown and reaped well within the Arctic Circle in Europe. Barley is no longer much used in bread-making, but it is used in soups and stews and as a starch. Its high-protein form finds a wide use as animal feed, and its low-protein form is used in brewing and distilling alcoholic beverages.

Book containing an alphabetical list of the important words in a major work, with reference to the places in which they occur. The first concordance was one for the Latin Vulgate Bible compiled by a Dominican monk in the 13th century.
Alexander Cruden composed a concordance of the Bible in 173of which many editions have appeared. Concordances to Shakespeare, Milton, and other writers also appear in many editions.

Written agreement between two or more states. Treaties take effect either immediately on signature or, more often, on ratification. Ratification involves a further exchange of documents and usually takes place after the internal governments have approved the terms of the treaty. Treaties are binding in international law, the rules being laid down in the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties 1969.
