Any tropical gymnosperm of the order Cycadales; having unbranched stems with a crown of fernlike leaves.
Plant of the order Cycadales belonging to the gymnosperms. Some have a superficial resemblance to palms, others to ferns. Their large cones contain fleshy seeds. There are ten genera and about 80–1species, native to tropical and subtropical countries. Cycads were widespread during the Mesozoic era.
The stems of many species yield an edible starchy substance resembling sago. In 19they were discovered to be pollinated by insects, not by wind as had been previously thought; their cones generate heat that vaporizes a sweet minty odor to attract insects to a supply of nectarlike liquid.
