Apennines
A mountain range extending the length of the Italian peninsula.
Chain of mountains stretching the length of the Italian peninsula. A continuation of the Maritime Alps, from Genoa it swings across the peninsula to Ancona on the east coast, and then back to the west coast and into the toe of Italy. The system is continued over the Strait of Messina along the N Sicilian coast, then across the Mediterranean Sea in a series of islands to the Atlas Mountains of N Africa. The highest peak is Gran Sasso dItalia at 2,914 m/9,560 ft.
