The original microprocessor in the 80x86 family from Intel, introduced in 1978. The 8086 has 16-bit registers, a 16-bit data bus, and 20-bit addressing, allowing access to 1 megabyte of memory. Its internal registers include a set that is organized in the same way as those of the 8080. Speeds range from 4.77 MHz to 10 MHz. See also 8080.
