(1870-1954) Austrian composer. A pupil of Max Bruch, he was chief conductor and composer at the Überbrettl cabaret, becoming a master of light satirical stage pieces. He is remembered for the operetta The Chocolate Soldier 1908.

Gen.oberst (19.7.1940); Eintritt ins Heer 15.3.1998, in der Reichswehr 1.12.1934 Gen.major, in der Wehrmacht 1.9.1937 Gen.leutnant und 1.11.1938 Gen. der Inf. S. führte seit 10.11.1938 als Kommand. Gen. das II. AK (Stettin), mit dem er im Verband der 3. Armee in den Krieg gegen Polen zog und u.a die Festung Modlin bezwang. Im Frankreichfeldzug gehörte sein Korps zur 4. Armee. S. wurde am 30.5.1940 OB der 9. Armee im W und rückte mit ihr bei Beginn der Feindseligkeiten in Rußland ein (Heeresgruppe Mitte). Aus gesundheitl. Gründen ließ er sich am 16.1.1942 von seinem Kommando entbinden und wurde erst am 17.1.1945 wieder verwendet, als er zum Kommandanten des Festungsbereichs Ost ernannt wurde. Nach Kriegsende geriet S. in brit. Gefangenschaft. Ritterkreuz (29.10.1939).

Large flightless bird Struthio camelus, found in Africa. The male may be about 2.5 m/8 ft tall and weigh 135 kg/300 lb, and is the largest living bird. It has exceptionally strong legs and feet (two-toed) that enable it to run at high speed, and are also used in defense. It lives in family groups of one cock with several hens, each of which incubates about 14 eggs.
Ostriches are bred in South Africa and elsewhere for leather and also for their tail feathers.
