Or voice input; In computing, any technique by which a computer can understand ordinary speech. Spoken words are divided into “frames”, each lasting about one-thirtieth of a second, which are converted to a wave form. These are then compared with a series of stored frames to determine the most likely word. Research into speech recognition started in 1938, but the technology did not become sufficiently developed for commercial applications until the late 1980s.
There are three types: separate word recognition for distinguishing up to several hundred separately spoken words; connected speech recognition for speech in which there is a short pause between words; and continuous speech recognition for normal but carefully articulated speech.
The capability of a computer to understand the spoken word for the purpose of receiving commands and data input from the speaker. Systems that can recognize limited vocabularies as spoken by specific individuals have been developed, but developing a system that deals with a variety of speech patterns and accents, as well as with the various ways in which a request or a statement can be made, is more difficult, although advances are being made in this area.
