(Ranke) (1895-1985) English poet and author. He was severely wounded on the Somme in World War I, and his frank autobiography Goodbye to All That 1929 is one of the outstanding war books. Other works include the poems Over the Brazier 1916; two historical novels of imperial Rome, I Claudius and Claudius the God, both 1934; and books on myth —for example, The White Goddess 1948.
