He developed the quantity theory of money from the quantity equation, which he formulated as MV = PT, M being the quantity of money in circulation (the money supply), V the velocity of circulation of money around the economy, P the average price level, and T the number of transactions (equivalent to output). This equation is sometimes known as the Fisher equation. The quantity theory assumes that V and T are relatively constant, and therefore suggests that an increase in the money supply causes inflation.
