ETYM Italian, aug. of tromba a trumpet: cf. French trombone. Related to Trump a trumpet.
A brass instrument consisting of a long tube whose length can be varied by a U-shaped slide.
Brass wind instrument of mainly cylindrical bore, incorporating a movable slide which allows a continuous glissando (slide) in pitch over a span of half an octave. A descendant of the Renaissance sackbut, the Baroque trombone has a shallow cup mouthpiece and modestly flared bell giving a firm, noble tone, to which the modern wide bell adds a brassy sheen. The tenor and bass trombones are staple instruments of the orchestra and brass band, also of Dixieland and jazz bands, either separately or as a tenor-bass hybrid.
Duvački muzički instrument sličan trubi samo sa savijenom cevi, čiji se pokretni delovi pomeraju naviše i naniže, i time proizvode razlike u tonovima; ima tonove snažnije od tonova trube.
Velika truba, pozauna.
