Any of several slow-moving arboreal mammals of South and Central America; they hang from branches back downward and feed on leaves and fruits; SYN. tree sloth.
South American mammal, about 70 cm/2.5 ft long, of the order Edentata. Sloths are grayish brown and have small rounded heads, rudimentary tails, and prolonged forelimbs. Each foot has long curved claws adapted to clinging upside down from trees. They are vegetarian.
Species include the three-toed sloth or ai Bradypus tridactylus, and the two-toed sloth Choloepus didactylus of northern South America.
