In Japanese history, title of a series of military strongmen 1192–18who relegated the emperor's role to that of figurehead. Technically an imperial appointment, the office was treated as hereditary and was held by the Minamoto clan 1192–121by the Ashikaga 1336–157and by the Tokugawa 1603–186The shogun held legislative, judicial, and executive power.
The emperor had been a national and religious figurehead rather than a direct ruler since the rise of the Fujiwara clan in the 9th century, but the exercise of power had been by officials of the court rather than of the army. The title of seii-tai-shogun, “barbarian-subduing commander”, first given 7to one of the imperial guards appointed to lead an expedition against the Ainu people, had before 11entailed only temporary military command. The bakufu (shogunate), the administrative structure set up by the first Minamoto shogun, gradually extended its area of operations to all aspects of government.
