Inflammation of the peritoneum.
Inflammation of the peritoneum. It may be due to bacterial infection, spread in the bloodstream; or it may arise from chemical irritation due to perforated ulcer or a ruptured appendix. It may also arise spontaneously due to accumulation of fluid (ascites) in liver disease or advanced cancer. Symptoms include abdominal pain and distension, fever and shock. The underlying disease is treated and antibiotics are given for infection.
