ETYM French cormoran, from Armor. môr-vran a sea raven; môr sea + bran raven, with cor, equiv. to Latin corvus raven, pleonastically prefixed; or perh. from Latin corvus marinus sea raven.
Large voracious dark-colored long-necked seabird with a distensible pouch for holding fish; used in Asia to catch fish; SYN. Phalacrocorax carbo.
Any of various diving seabirds, mainly of the genus Phalacrocorax, about 90 cm/3 ft long, with webbed feet, long neck, hooked beak, and glossy black plumage. There are some 30 species of cormorant worldwide, including a flightless form Nannopterum harrisi in the Galápagos Islands. Cormorants generally feed on fish and shellfish. Some species breed on inland lakes and rivers.
