A program used to view html documents; SYN. web browser.
A program that allows users to read hypertext documents on the World Wide Web, and navigate between them. Examples are Netscape Navigato, and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Browsers can be text-based or graphic.
Any program that allows the user to search for and view data. Browsers are usually limited to a particular type of data, so, for example, a graphics browser will display graphics files stored in many different file formats. Browsers do not permit the user to edit data, but are sometimes able to convert data from one file format to another. Mosaic, a program that allows users to view documents on the World-Wide Web, is an example of a browser.
