A city in southern Japan on Kyushu; a leading port and shipbuilding center; on August 9, 1945 Nagasaki became the second populated area to receive an atomic bomb.
Industrial port (coal, iron, shipbuilding) on Kyushu Island, Japan; Nagasaki was the only Japanese port open to European trade from the 16th century until 1859. An atomic bomb was dropped on it by the US 9 Aug 1945.
Three days after Hiroshima, the second atomic bomb was dropped here at the end of World War II. Of Nagasaki's population of 212,000, 73,884 were killed and 76,796 injured, not counting the long-term victims of radiation.
