The Hebrew prophet who led the Israelites from Egypt across the Red sea on a journey known as the Exodus; Moses received the Ten Commandments from God on Mount Sinai.
(lived c. 13th century BC) Hebrew lawgiver and judge who led the Hebrews out of slavery in Egypt (Exodus) and, after wandering 40 years in the desert, brought them to the border (E of the Jordan) of the promised land of Canaan. On Mount Sinai he claimed to have received from Jehovah the Ten Commandments engraved on tablets of stone. The first five books of the Old Testament—in Judaism, the Torah— are called the Five Books of Moses.
According to the Torah, the infant Moses was hidden among the bulrushes on the banks of the Nile when the pharaoh commanded that all newborn male Hebrew children should be destroyed. He was found by a daughter of pharaoh, who reared him. His brother Aaron helped him lead and he and his descendants are the high priests of Judaism. Moses died at the age of 120, being allowed only a view of the promised land (from Mt Pisgah).
