Former principality in E Europe, on the river Danube, occupying an area divided today between Moldova and Romania. It was independent between the 14th and 16th centuries, when it became part of the Ottoman Empire. In 1861 Moldavia was united with its neighboring principality Wallachia as Romania. In 1940 the eastern part, Bessarabia, became part of the USSR, whereas the western part remained in Romania.
