Množina: Falashas
Member of black Jewish tribe of Ethiopia.
Member of a small community of black Jews originating in Ethiopia. They suffered discrimination there and, after being accorded Jewish status by Israel 1975, began a gradual process of resettlement in Israel. By the early 1980s only about 30,000 Falashim remained in Ethiopia, and the final emigration to Israel took place during the collapse of the Mengistu regime 1991.
The Falashim refer to themselves as Beta Israel (“House of Israel”).
