A state of Uganda and site of a former Bantu kingdom.
Either of two provinces (North and South Buganda) of Uganda, home of the Baganda people and formerly a kingdom from the 17th century. The former kabaka or king, Edward Mutesa II (1924–1969), was the first president of independent Uganda 1962–66. He was deposed as monarch 1966.
His son Ronald Mutebi (1955– ) is sabataka (head of the Baganda clans) and from 1993 (when the monarchy was restored) also king.
