A city of northern Poland near the mouth of the Vistula; Also called: Danzig.
(German Danzig) Polish port; Oil is refined, and textiles, televisions, and fertilizers are produced. In the 1980s there were repeated antigovernment strikes at the Lenin shipyards.
Formerly a member of the Hanseatic League, it was in almost continuous Prussian possession 17931919, when it again became a free city under the protection of the League of Nations. However, it still had a large German population, many of whom were Nazi party supporters. Constant Nazi agitation for reunification with Germany generated tension between Germany and Poland throughout the 1930s. It was taken by the Germans at the start of the Polish campaign, and was liberated by the Soviets under Marshal Rokossovsky 30 March 1945. The annexation of the city by Germany marked the beginning of World War II. It reverted to Poland 1945, when the churches and old merchant houses were restored. The Lenin shipyards were the birthplace of Solidarity, the Polish resistance movement to pro-Soviet communism, 1981.

Acronym for Graphical Device Interface. In Windows, a graphics display system used by applications to display or print bitmapped text (TrueType fonts), images, and other graphical elements. The GDI is responsible for drawing dialog boxes, buttons, and other elements in a consistent style on screen by calling the appropriate screen drivers and passing them the information on the item to be drawn. The GDI also works with GDI printers, which have limited ability to prepare a page for printing. Instead, the GDI handles that task by calling the appropriate printer drivers and moving the image or document directly to the printer, rather than reformatting the image or document in PostScript or another printer language. See also bitmapped font, dialog box, driver, PostScript.
