Nonexistent principle of flammability inherent in matter
Principle of combustibility once supposed to exist in all inflammable substances. Hypothetical substance formerly believed to have been produced during combustion. The term was invented by the German chemist Georg Stahl. The phlogiston theory was replaced by the theory of oxygen gain and loss, first enunciated by the French chemist Antoine Lavoisier.
