U svetu ima oko 450 vrsta vilinih konjica. Svi oni žive oko slatkih voda. Velika većina su korisni, jer jedu druge, najčešće štetne insekte. Najveća poslastica vilinih konjica kod nas su komarci, muve i drugi insekti pored vode. Ali ima i štetnih vrsta čije larve u vodi proždiru mlađ riba, a jedna vrsta u Americi napada čak i pčelinje matice.
Često može da se vidi vilin konjic kako "patrolira" izna vode i s nepogrešivom tačnošću hvata plen. Zatim precizno sleće na neku stneu ili trsku obasjanu suncem, umiri s

They all have long narrow bodies, two pairs of almost equal-sized, glassy wings with a network of veins; short, bristlelike antennae; powerful, toothed mouthparts; and very large compound eyes which may have up to 30,000 facets. They hunt other insects by sight, both as adults and as aquatic nymphs.
The largest species have a wingspan of 18 cm/7 in, but fossils related to dragonflies with wings up to 70 cm/2.3 ft across have been found.
