windsurfing
IPA: / wɪndsɝːfɪŋ /Or boardsailing or sailboarding; Water sport combining elements of surfing and sailing, first developed in the US 1968. The windsurfer stands on a board that is propelled and steered by means of a sail attached to a mast that is articulated at the foot. Since 1984 the sport has been included in the Olympic Games as part of the yachting events. From 1992 men and women have to compete in separate categories. There are also annual boardsailing world championships.
Using the Lechner board, speeds in excess of 40 knots have been achieved. The 1990 winners of the Lechner class world championship were (men) Michel Quinten (France) and (women) Penny Way (UK).
