Appalachian Mountains

IPA: / æpəleɪtʃənz /Mountain system of E North America, stretching about 1,500 mi/2,400 km from Alabama to Québec, composed of ancient eroded rocks and rounded peaks. The chain separates the MississippiMissouri lowlands from the Atlantic coastal plain and includes the Allegheny, Catskill, White, and Blue Ridge mountains, the last having the highest peak, Mount Mitchell, 6,712 ft/2,045 m. The E edge has a fall line to the coastal plain where Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington stand. The Appalachians are heavily forested and have deposits of coal and other minerals.
