(1898-1948) Latvian-born Soviet film director. He pioneered film theory and introduced the use of montage (the juxtaposition of shots to create a particular effect) as a means of propaganda, as in The Battleship Potemkin 1925.
The Soviet dictator Stalin banned the second (and last) part of Eisenstein’s projected three-film epic Ivan the Terrible 1944–46. His other films include Strike 1925, October 1928, Que Viva Mexico! 1931–32, and Alexander Nevsky 1938.
