Austrian actor and director. In Hollywood from 1914, he was successful as an actor in villainous roles. His career as a director, which produced films such as Foolish Wives 1922, was wrecked by his extravagance (Greed 1923) and he returned to acting in such films as La Grande Illusion 1937 and Sunset Boulevard 1950.
He also directed Queen Kelly 1928 (unfinished).
