hemoglobin
Množina: hemoglobins
(Alternate spelling: haemoglobin)
A conjugated protein composed of heme and globin that gives red blood cells their characteristic color; function primarily to transport oxygen from the lungs to the body tissues; SYN. haemoglobin.
Protein that carries oxygen. In vertebrates it occurs in red blood cells, giving them their color. Oxygen attaches to hemoglobin in the lungs or gills where the amount dissolved in the blood is high. This process effectively increases the amount of oxygen that can be carried in the bloodstream. The oxygen is later released in the body tissues where it is at low concentration. Hemoglobin also works in carrying carbon dioxide away from tissues to the lungs or gills.
