1. Important food fish on both sides of the Atlantic; related to cod but usually smaller; SYN. Melanogrammus aeglefinus.
2. Lean white flesh of fish similar to but smaller than cod; usually baked or poached or as fillets sauteed or fried.
Marine fish Melanogrammus aeglefinus of the cod family found off the N Atlantic coast. It is brown with silvery underparts and black markings above the pectoral fins.
It can grow to a length of 1 m/3 ft. Haddock are important food fish; about 45 million kg/100 million lb are taken annually off the New England fishing banks alone.
