futurism
Množina: futurisms
An artistic movement in Italy around 1910 that tried to express the energy and values of the machine age.
Literary and artistic movement 190914, originating in Paris.
The Italian poet Filippo Marinetti published the Futurist Manifesto 1909 urging Italian artists to join him in Futurism. In their works the Futurists eulogized the modern world and the beauty of speed and energy. Combining the shifting geometric planes of Cubism with vibrant colors, they aimed to capture the dynamism of a speeding automobile or train by the simultaneous repetition of forms. As a movement Futurism died out during World War I, but the Futurists exultation in war and violence was seen as an early manifestation of fascism.
Gino Severini painted a topsy-turvy landscape as if seen from the window of a moving train, in Suburban Train Arriving in Paris 1915 (Tate Gallery, London), and Giacomo Balla attempted to represent speed in such pictures as Abstract Speed-wake of a Speeding Automobile 1919 (Tate Gallery, London).
Umberto Boccioni, a sculptor, froze his figures as if they were several frames of a film moving at once.
