Australian artist. He painted in watercolor and oil. In 1888 Conder joined Tom Roberts in Melbourne forming the Australian Impressionist group which became known as the Heidelberg School.
Although his early work, such as The Departure of the SS Orient—Circular Quay 1888 (Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney), is distinctly Impressionist in style, he later became known for his delicate watercolors painted on silk and for series of lithograph prints, such as Carnival 1905 (executed following his return to Europe 1890).
