ETYM New Lat., from Greek azaleos dry, -- so called because supposed to grow best in dry ground.
Any of numerous ornamental shrubs grown for their showy flowers of various colors.
Any of various deciduous flowering shrubs, genus Rhododendron, of the heath family Ericaceae. There are several species native to Asia and North America, and from these many cultivated varieties have been derived. Azaleas are closely related to the evergreen rhododendrons of the same genus.
Azaleas, particularly the Japanese varieties, make fine ornamental shrubs. Several species are highly poisonous.
