The sum of the values of a random variable divided by the number of values; SYN. first moment, expectation, expected value.
The average of a set of n numbers, obtained by adding the numbers and dividing by n . For example, the arithmetic mean of the set of 5 numbers 1, 3, 6, 8, and 12 is (1 + 3 + 6 + 8 + 12)/5 = 30/5 = 6.
The term average is often used to refer only to the arithmetic mean, even though the mean is in fact only one form of average (the others include median and mode).
