(Flemish Antwerpen, French Anvers) Port in Belgium on the river Scheldt, capital of the province of Antwerp; est) 465,100. One of the world's busiest ports, it has shipbuilding, oil-refining, petrochemical, textile, and diamond-cutting industries. The home of the artist Rubens is preserved, and many of his works are in the Gothic cathedral. The province of Antwerp has an area of 2,900 sq km/1,119 sq mi; est) 1,619,900.
history Antwerp rose to prosperity in the 15th and from 1500 to 1560 it was the richest port in N Europe. Later Antwerp was beset by religious troubles and the Netherlands revolt against Spain. In 1648 the Treaty of Westphalia gave both shores of the Scheldt estuary to the United Provinces, which closed it to Antwerp trade. The Treaty of Paris 1814 opened the estuary to all nations on payment of a small toll to the Dutch, abandoned 1863. During World War I Antwerp was occupied by Germany Oct 1914Nov 1918; during World War II, May 1940Sept 1944.
