An almond-shaped neural structure in the anterior part of the temporal lobe of the cerebrum; intimately connected with the hypothalamus and the hippocampus and the cingulate gyrus.
Any almond-shaped formation in body, e.g. tonsil.
Almond-shaped region of the brain that links the cortex, responsible for conscious thought, with the regions controlling emotions. A 1994 US study showed that it was involved in interpreting fear-provoking information and linking it to fear responses. For example, where the amygdala is damaged patients are unable to recognize fearful expressions.
