Explosive consisting of ammonium nitrate and TNT (trinitrotoluene) in almost any proportions.
Amatol was first produced in Britain 1915 to economize on TNT, supplies of which were then limited, and was used throughout World War I by British and US forces. Particular attention had to be paid to waterproofing any munitions it was used in as it absorbs atmospheric humidity.
