Person who believes that Christ will return to make a second appearance on the Earth. Expectation of the Second Coming of Christ is found in New Testament writings generally. Adventist views are held in particular by the Seventh-Day Adventist church (with 1.5 million members in 200 countries), Christadelphians, the Jehovah's Witnesses, the Four Square Gospel Alliance, the Advent Christian church, and the Evangelical Adventist church.
Most American adventists trace their origins to the Millerites of the 1840s, who accepted the calculation of William Miller, a Baptist farmer in New York State, that the Second Coming of Christ would occur on Oct 22, 1844. When it failed to occur, Miller admitted his deductions had been mistaken, but he and his remaining followers continued to expect the imminent return of Christ, and they formed churches that evolved into the contemporary adventist groups.
