1. Gaping open as if threatening to engulf someone or something.
2. With the mouth wide open indicating boredom or sleepiness.
Reflex opening of the mouth drawing air into the lungs that is then slowly exhaled. It occurs normally as a feature of boredom or fatigue but may occur excessively in patients with damage to the lower brainstem.
